Frederick Delius - Songs of Sunset (1907)
A beautifully sweet set of songs, especially the endings of each. Delius and Messiaen probably could've been good friends with all the major sixth chords...
00:00 A song of the setting sun! [An initially sweet and quiet chorale, moves around nervously with heavy chromaticism]
03:26 Cease smiling, Dear! [A bright, romantic duet of soprano and baritone solos] (4:45 rather more animated)
08:12 Pale amber sunlight falls [Slow and mysterious. Beautifully warm chorus enters alongside brilliant rays of flutes]
12:38 Exceeding sorrow consumeth my sad heart! [An anguished soprano solo]
16:20 By the sad waters of separation [A lamentful baritone solo]
21:08 See how the trees and the osiers lithe [A light-hearted choral march decorated with impressionistic ornamentation]
24:43 I was not sorrowful, I could not weep [Baritone solo, gorgeously subtle orchestration around it. (Reminds me of one of the Genshin Liyue tracks actually)]
27:53 [The ending of the section is just heart-achingly gorgeous]
29:26 They are not long, the weeping and the laughter [Solo soprano and baritone combine with the chorus for a grand final song, ending calmly and sweetly in a dream]
Composer: Frederick Theodore Albert Delius (January 29, 1862 - June 10, 1934)
Orchestra: Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Richard Hickox

This is so far off the scale for music in 1912 that it compares favorably with any of the ultra modern scores written 50 years later. I would love to know what Ives was thinking when he composed this incredible salute to our national holiday. His 4th of July is in a class by itself.

Anyone knows why she plays a B instead of a C in the top voice 0:23 ? I mean it clearly says C and other versions of the piece also have C in the melody. If the interpreter thinks it sounds bad with the C, and therefore has changed it, well she isn't fit to play Milhaud in the first place one might say... Thank you for the post though!

In my opinion, the Second Cello Concerto is one of the greatest and most touching works of Rautavaara's 21st-century output. Its subtitle, "Towards the Horizon," is intriguing and ambiguous. Life is a constant journey towards a new horizon, but at the same time, it involves letting go of the old landscape. The music of the concerto aptly reflects the ambivalent feeling of letting go, combining nostalgia and bittersweet melancholy. Moreover, I cannot help but think that in this late work, the elderly composer, who had been seriously ill, was also mentally preparing for his own departure towards the final horizon. In the finale of the concerto, there are three moments where the high, ethereal song of the cello seems to try to entice the rest of the orchestra to join it beyond the horizon. The orchestra responds to the first "call" with a curt and defiant reply (13:41). To the second call, the orchestra answers with a resigned and somber, chorale-like progression (15:30). But after the third call, the orchestra joins the solo cello beyond the horizon, into a golden sunset, and the music fades away (20:51). In the end, after all the bittersweetness and wistfulness, there was acceptance: a serene, perfect harmony.

For amplified solo voice, amplified solo violin, and ensemble Text: Dino Campana Instrumentation: soprano(amplified)/fl/hn.3tpt.2tbn.btbn/pf/vn(amplified).db This work can be performed alone, or with film. The DVD "Passeggiata in America e ritorno" was made in 1999. The score consists of a short "ouverture" for keyboard and a song for jazz singer, violin and keyboard. The text solo consists of two long fragments of the poem in prose by Dino Campana with the same name. The visual artist Marijke van Warmerdam made a rigorous interpretation of Campana's beautiful, surrealist poetry into an adventurous, polyinterpretable imagery. The song is especially composed for the Italian singer Cristina Zavalloni. --Louis Andriessen

This is a magnificent Hymn in honor of our savior Jesus. May we never forget what a great sacrifice Jesus made for us. God gave us his only begotten son so that we may be saved from our sins. Now doesn't that show us how much God and his son truly love us. Let us never forget that. Anyways, this is simply a very beautiful hymn. Thanks be to Gustav Holst for composing this and to you for uploading this wonderful recording.
